Welcome

Patients and their Relatives often feel frightened by the idea of 'Research'. The aim of research is to learn how to treat patients better.

Clinical trials usually split patients into two groups: one that receives standard current therapy and the other who receive standard therapy plus the study therapy. At the end of the trial, the two groups are compared to see if the newer way of treatment is better.

In addition to having to satisfy all of the ICU consultants of the merits of a study, all trials undergo Ethical Review and are subject to Governance Standards dictated by the government. We won't sign up to a trial unless we would let a member of our family take part.

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act but a habit." - Aristotle (384 BC - 322 BC)
